Safe Amalgam Removal

Although silver amalgam was the dominant choice years ago, we now have better, safer options for fillings. Amalgam fillings contain mercury and do not expand and contract with changing teeth. Years down the road, these fillings have caused tooth fractures and pain. At our office, we use natural-looking fillings to restore your teeth and can safely remove amalgam fillings following the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).

What should I know about safe amalgam removal?

  • The first step in the SMART process is a consultation to review the treatment process and all safety measures. This will set clear expectations for the visit.
  • Before and/or after treatment, the patient may be given charcoal or similar absorbent to help absorb and eliminate any mercury that may accidentally enter the body during the removal process.
  • The treatment room will contain a high-volume air filtration system to remove mercury vapor and amalgam particles generated during the treatment.
  • The patient and our team members will be wearing personal protective equipment throughout the entire procedure.

Why choose a composite filling instead of an amalgam filling?
A composite filling is a tooth-colored ceramic and plastic mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composite fillings are custom-made to match the exact color of your teeth, creating a more natural appearance. These white fillings are typically less noticeable than other materials and will help keep your teeth healthy, functional and natural-looking. Composite fillings not only match the tooth better, but they also decrease the chances for tooth cracking and pain.
